Marathi film Gondhal has moved into the national spotlight after being selected as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2027. Despite having a modest theatrical run, the film gradually earned recognition through its festival journey. Its Oscar selection has now created wider interest among audiences across India and renewed curiosity about its story, cast and availability.

Directed by Santosh Davakhar, Gondhal is set in rural Maharashtra and unfolds over the course of a single night. The narrative centres on a newly married couple and a traditional Maharashtrian ritual that becomes the foundation for an intimate exploration of village life. The film must still compete with official entries from other countries and progress through the Academy’s shortlist and final nomination stages. The recognition nevertheless gives the Marathi production an international platform that would have been difficult to achieve through its limited theatrical release alone.

The announcement has led many viewers to search for where they can watch Gondhal. At present, the film is not available on major OTT platforms, and no confirmed streaming partner has been announced. That lack of digital access may temporarily limit its ability to capitalise on the attention generated by the Oscar selection.
