Director Subba Reddy has voluntarily transferred the registered title “Varanasi” to the upcoming SS Rajamouli–Mahesh Babu film without accepting any payment, describing the decision as his contribution to Telugu cinema.
Subba Reddy Gives Away His Dream Title
Director Subba Reddy has handed over the title “Varanasi,” which he had registered under his production banner in 2023, to the prestigious film directed by SS Rajamouli and starring Mahesh Babu. Subba Reddy revealed that he had already started developing a story using the same title and considered it emotionally important. However, after learning that Rajamouli and producer KL Narayana wanted the title for their ambitious project, he decided to release it voluntarily. He made it clear that no financial transaction was involved and that he did not demand or accept any payment for transferring the title.
A Gesture Made for Telugu Cinema
Speaking during an interaction attended by Producers Council Secretary Prasanna Kumar and former Directors’ Association President Veera Shankar, Subba Reddy said that giving the title to such a major film was a matter of pride. He described Mahesh Babu as one of his favourite actors and said he was honoured to contribute, even in a small way, to a project involving Mahesh Babu, SS Rajamouli and KL Narayana. According to Subba Reddy, a movie title carries emotion and creative value and should not always be viewed as a commercial asset. He added that he was happy to give “Varanasi” to a film that could bring greater recognition to Telugu cinema worldwide.
Industry Leaders Praise the Decision
Veera Shankar explained that Subba Reddy had initially been deeply attached to the title, which was why industry representatives did not approach him immediately. Later, they explained the importance of the title for Rajamouli’s film and the positive message that such cooperation could send across the industry. After understanding the situation, Subba Reddy readily agreed to transfer it. Veera Shankar praised the decision, saying it demonstrated how filmmakers could resolve title-related matters through communication, mutual respect and goodwill rather than treating them only as business negotiations.
Best Wishes for the Rajamouli–Mahesh Babu Film
The participants said Subba Reddy’s gesture had set a healthy example for the Telugu film industry and could encourage greater cooperation among producers and directors. They extended their best wishes to director SS Rajamouli, actor Mahesh Babu, producer KL Narayana, music director MM Keeravani and lyricist Chandrabose. They expressed confidence that “Varanasi” would become a landmark project and further strengthen the global reputation of Telugu cinema. Subba Reddy’s decision has also attracted attention because it reflects the respect and unity that can exist among filmmakers when supporting a major creative project.
