CWG 2026 India Athletics Results: Two Stars Reach Finals

India’s Strong Start in CWG 2026 Athletics

India’s athletics campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2026 produced mixed results in Glasgow. Tejas Shirse and Murali Sreeshankar reached their finals, Gurindervir Singh exited the men’s 100m, and swimmer Sajan Prakash advanced in the 200m butterfly event.

CWG 2026 India Athletics Results: Shirse, Sreeshankar in Finals

CWG 2026 India athletics results delivered a mixed but encouraging afternoon for the national contingent in Glasgow on Monday, July 27. Tejas Shirse and Murali Sreeshankar booked their places in major finals, while Gurindervir Singh’s men’s 100m campaign ended in the opening round.

India also received good news from the swimming pool as experienced campaigner Sajan Prakash advanced to the men’s 200m butterfly final. The results kept several medal opportunities alive as the athletics programme began at the Commonwealth Games.

CWG 2026 India Athletics Results Bring Two Final Places

Murali Sreeshankar needed only one attempt to secure direct qualification for the men’s long jump final. The Kerala athlete produced an 8.01-metre jump, clearing the automatic qualification standard and completing his qualification session immediately.

Sreeshankar entered Glasgow as one of India’s leading athletics medal hopes. The Birmingham 2022 silver medallist has worked his way back into strong form following surgery in 2024. His confident opening jump offered an encouraging sign ahead of the medal round.

Tejas Ashok Shirse also progressed to the men’s 110m hurdles final. The Indian hurdler clocked 13.76 seconds and finished third in his opening-round heat.

England’s Samuel Bennett won the heat in 13.20 seconds, while Jamaica’s Jerome Campbell claimed second place in 13.33 seconds. Shirse completed a controlled race and secured another opportunity to challenge for a medal in the final.

Gurindervir Singh Misses Men’s 100m Semi-Finals

The major disappointment came in the men’s 100m, where Gurindervir Singh finished second in Heat 4 but failed to advance. He recorded 10.39 seconds, finishing behind Jamaica’s Rohan Watson, who clocked 10.13 seconds.

Qualification was determined by the fastest overall times across all the heats rather than finishing position alone. Gurindervir’s timing ultimately placed him outside the semi-final qualification cut.

The result was slower than the 25-year-old sprinter’s national-record performance of 10.09 seconds earlier in the season. Wet, cold and windy conditions made the sprinting events more challenging, but the field remained quick enough to end the Indian athlete’s individual 100m campaign.

Sajan Prakash Reaches 200m Butterfly Final

Sajan Prakash strengthened India’s swimming campaign by qualifying for the men’s 200m butterfly final. He finished second in his heat with a time of 1 minute 58.59 seconds.

The performance placed him seventh among the qualifiers across the three heats, earning him a position in the medal race. The experienced Indian swimmer will return for the final with an opportunity to add another important achievement to his international career.

India Keeps Multiple Medal Chances Alive

India’s Monday campaign produced contrasting outcomes, but the overall picture remained positive. Sreeshankar’s one-jump qualification underlined his medal potential, while Shirse showed composure in the hurdles.

Sajan Prakash’s progress also ensured Indian interest in the swimming final. Gurindervir’s early exit was a setback, particularly after his record-breaking domestic season.

However, with Sreeshankar, Shirse, and Prakash reaching their respective finals, India retained several opportunities to strengthen its Commonwealth Games medal tally in Glasgow.
