The Union government has approved ₹840.41 crore for a major road upgrade in Andhra Pradesh aimed at strengthening access to the Polavaram Irrigation Project, farming centres and key Godavari-region destinations. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced the approval for the development of the Buttaigudem–LND Peta and Pattiseema–Kovvur sections of National Highway 365BB.

The proposed work covers a total stretch of 45.09 kilometres. The road will be upgraded into a two-lane highway with paved shoulders, a move expected to make travel safer and more reliable for residents, farmers, traders, pilgrims and tourists. The project is seen as an important infrastructure push for villages located around the Polavaram project area and the agriculturally significant belt of Andhra Pradesh.

Better road access is expected to directly support farmers who depend on quick transport links to move their produce to local and larger markets. The region produces commodities such as tobacco, sugarcane and palm products, and the upgraded highway could reduce travel delays while improving the movement of goods.

A smoother road network can also help transporters and rural businesses access collection points, processing centres and market yards more efficiently. For farmers, reliable connectivity is particularly important during harvest periods, when delays can affect the quality and value of produce.

The highway upgrade is expected to strengthen farm-to-market connectivity and create a more dependable transport corridor for agricultural activity. Improved access may also support local employment by making it easier for businesses, suppliers and service providers to operate across the region.

The NH 365BB development is also expected to improve connectivity between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The project will provide a stronger road link for commuters and commercial traffic moving through the border-region route, while improving access to communities that depend on the existing road sections.

The upgraded alignment is likely to benefit daily travellers as well as emergency services, public transport and freight movement. Paved shoulders are expected to improve road safety by offering additional space for vehicles and helping manage traffic more effectively on a route that serves both rural settlements and high-activity destinations.

The investment highlights the importance of improving regional connectivity around major irrigation and development projects. It is expected to give the Polavaram area a stronger role in trade, transport and rural economic activity.

The road improvement is expected to make travel easier to important Godavari ghats, the Polavaram Dam and nearby tourism and pilgrimage centres. Better access could encourage more visitors to explore the region while helping local hospitality, retail and transport businesses.

The project may become especially significant ahead of the Godavari Pushkaralu scheduled for 2027, when large numbers of devotees and visitors are expected to travel to riverfront ghats and religious locations. Improved roads could help manage traffic movement and provide a safer journey for pilgrims.

According to Gadkari, the NH 365BB upgrade is designed to support agriculture, tourism, pilgrimage, trade and broader socio-economic growth. With the ₹840.41 crore approval now in place, the project is expected to become a key infrastructure development for the Polavaram region and surrounding parts of Andhra Pradesh.
