Anitha Radhakrishnan Arrested Over Remarks Against Tamil Nadu CM Vijay
Thoothukudi, July 3, 2026: Tiruchendur DMK MLA and former Fisheries Minister Anitha R. Radhakrishnan was arrested on Friday in Thoothukudi district in connection with a case registered over his alleged objectionable remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
The arrest came after the Madras High Court dismissed his anticipatory bail plea in the case filed by the Authoor police. Police said the case was linked to remarks made by Radhakrishnan during a public meeting held in Authoor on June 20.
Madras High Court Rejects Bail Plea
The Madras High Court refused to grant anticipatory bail to Radhakrishnan after hearing arguments from both sides. The case was registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to intentional insult and statements allegedly causing public mischief.
During the hearing, the court observed that elected representatives should exercise restraint while speaking about public offices. The order copy was awaited at the time of the legal report.
Police Take MLA For Inquiry
Following the court’s decision, police took Radhakrishnan into custody when he was reportedly visiting a government office for constituency-related inspection work. He was later taken for further inquiry in connection with the case.
The development has triggered a fresh political row in Tamil Nadu, where tensions between the ruling TVK and opposition DMK have been rising in recent weeks.
Stalin, Kanimozhi Condemn Arrest
DMK president and former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin strongly criticised the arrest and questioned the urgency shown by the police. He alleged that the government was targeting opposition leaders instead of focusing on law and order issues in the State.
Thoothukudi MP and DMK deputy general secretary Kanimozhi also condemned the arrest, calling it an oppressive move by the TVK government. She said the DMK would not be intimidated by such action.
Political Tension Deepens In Tamil Nadu
The arrest has added another flashpoint to Tamil Nadu politics, with the DMK accusing the TVK government of using police action against critics. The ruling side, however, has maintained that objectionable remarks against the office of the Chief Minister cannot be ignored.
The case is likely to remain politically sensitive as both parties continue to trade charges over governance, opposition rights, and political conduct in public life.
