TMC Faces Major Bengal Crisis After Ritabrata Banerjee Rebellion
TMC faces its biggest internal crisis as 58 MLAs back Ritabrata Banerjee, raising fresh questions over party control in West Bengal.
The Trinamool Congress is facing a major political crisis after 58 dissident MLAs backed expelled leader Ritabrata Banerjee as their legislative party leader in West Bengal. The move came after days of tension, a signature-forgery allegation, and growing resentment over Abhishek Banerjee’s role in party decisions.
How The Rebellion Grew
The crisis reportedly began after a chance meeting between Ritabrata Banerjee and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari in Delhi. Soon after, questions were raised over documents submitted to the Assembly on the TMC legislature party leadership. Ritabrata and Sandipan Saha alleged that signatures of some MLAs had been misused, turning the issue into a political flashpoint.
Setback For Mamata Banerjee
After TMC expelled Ritabrata and Sandipan, the rebel camp gained more strength. The group later submitted support letters to the Speaker and pushed Ritabrata as its leader.
The split is a serious setback for Mamata Banerjee, who founded TMC in 1998. While rebels still project respect for her, their main criticism is aimed at Abhishek Banerjee’s influence. The crisis may now reshape Bengal’s opposition politics.
