PM Modi Praises Lovlina for Flag Stand at Glasgow Restaurant
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain for speaking up after noticing a distorted representation of the Indian flag at a restaurant in Glasgow during the Commonwealth Games.
The issue came up when India’s Commonwealth Games medallists met Modi at his residence in New Delhi. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State for Sports Raksha Khadse and Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha were also present during the interaction.
Modi asked Lovlina about the restaurant incident, prompting the boxer to explain that she had noticed the incorrect display while athletes were celebrating the end of India’s campaign.
PM Modi Praises Lovlina’s Response To Distorted Flag
Lovlina said the athletes were celebrating their performance on the final day of the Games when she spotted the distorted flag. She told Modi that she did not like seeing it displayed incorrectly and politely brought the matter to the attention of the restaurant staff.
According to Lovlina, the restaurant subsequently corrected the display. Modi appreciated the boxer for noticing the issue even during a celebratory moment. He said her response reflected the importance she attached to the national flag and told her that the video of the incident was not an ordinary one.
He added that her action would be remembered by people for a long time. Lovlina, a Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist, won silver at the Commonwealth Games as India completed a successful campaign in Glasgow.
PM Modi Meets India’s Commonwealth Games Medallists
India finished fourth in the medal standings with 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze. The interaction with Modi included several stories from athletes about their experiences during the Games. Apart from Lovlina’s flag incident, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu spoke about the emotions surrounding her gold medal victory.
Mirabai won the women’s 48kg title with a Games-record total lift of 190kg. She recalled becoming emotional on the podium as memories of recent struggles returned. She said she had missed a medal at the Paris Olympics by just one kilogram and had also dealt with injuries and family-related difficulties during the following years.
PM Modi Hears Mirabai Chanu’s Emotional Glasgow Story
Mirabai said watching the Indian flag rise while hearing the national anthem after winning gold made the moment deeply emotional for her. The meeting also included lighter moments. Boxer Narender Berwal recalled an amusing exchange involving a Pakistani boxer after their bout at the 2015 Military World Games.
Modi also praised boxer Jadumani Singh, who dedicated his Glasgow gold medal to the Indian armed forces after defeating a Pakistani opponent on July 26, observed as Kargil Vijay Diwas. The interaction highlighted not only India’s medal success at the Commonwealth Games but also the personal stories and moments of national pride experienced by the athletes.
For Lovlina, her Glasgow campaign will now be remembered for more than her silver medal. Her decision to raise the issue of the distorted Indian flag drew special praise from the Prime Minister and became one of the standout moments from the athletes’ meeting in New Delhi.
