PV Sindhu Wins Historic Japan Open 2026 Title

PV Sindhu created Indian badminton history by defeating home favourite Akane Yamaguchi in straight games to win the Japan Open 2026 women’s singles title in Tokyo.

The two-time Olympic medallist secured a 21-17, 21-17 victory in approximately 50 minutes on Sunday, July 19. The result made Sindhu the first Indian badminton player to win the prestigious Japan Open and earned her the first BWF Super 750 title of her career.

Sindhu Overcomes Difficult Opening

The opening game remained closely contested as Yamaguchi used her speed and defensive skills to place Sindhu under pressure. The Japanese star carried a narrow 11-9 advantage into the mid-game interval, but Sindhu responded strongly after the break.

Instead of relying only on powerful smashes, the Indian shuttler varied her attacks with controlled pushes, sharp drops, and accurate cross-court shots. Her tactical changes helped her regain control as the game moved towards its decisive stage.

Yamaguchi continued to defend strongly and drew level late in the contest. However, with the score tied at 17-17, Sindhu raised her intensity and claimed four consecutive points to close the opening game 21-17.

Sindhu Controls the Second Game

Sindhu carried the momentum into the second game and quickly established an 8-3 advantage. Her attacking placement repeatedly forced Yamaguchi into uncomfortable positions, while her improved movement allowed her to dominate exchanges at the net and rear court.

The Indian extended her lead to 14-7 as Yamaguchi struggled to find consistent openings. Although the home favourite mounted a late comeback and reduced the deficit to 19-17, Sindhu remained composed during the final points.

A precise finish gave Sindhu the second game by the same 21-17 scoreline, completing a memorable straight-game victory in front of Yamaguchi’s home supporters.

First Indian Japan Open Champion

The PV Sindhu Japan Open 2026 title is one of the most significant achievements of her career. No Indian had previously won the tournament, making the victory an important milestone for Indian badminton.

The result also improved Sindhu’s head-to-head record against Yamaguchi to 16 victories from their 30 meetings. Her previous completed-match win over the Japanese player had come at the Thailand Open in 2022.

Yamaguchi, a three-time world champion, has consistently been one of the strongest defensive players on the international circuit. Defeating her in straight games in Japan, therefore, added further importance to Sindhu’s achievement.

Major Boost Ahead of World Championships

The triumph represents a significant return to form for Sindhu following seasons affected by injuries and inconsistent results. It was her first major tournament victory since the Singapore Open in 2022 and her first tour-level title since the Syed Modi International in December 2024.

Sindhu’s controlled attacking performance also demonstrated that she can continue competing against the world’s leading women’s singles players. Rather than depending purely on power, she displayed patience, variation, and better shot selection throughout the final.

The Japan Open victory arrives ahead of the BWF World Championships scheduled to be held in New Delhi from August 17 to 23, giving Sindhu valuable confidence before another important international challenge.
