India’s Shot Put Duo Advances at CWG 2026

India’s Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill qualified for the CWG 2026 men’s shot put final in Glasgow. Animesh Kujur recorded a season-best in the 200m, while India faced setbacks in weightlifting and swimming before several late medal events.

Tajinderpal Toor and Samardeep Gill reached the CWG 2026 shot put final on Wednesday, strengthening India’s prospects in athletics at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Their qualification provided a positive lift during a mixed afternoon for the Indian contingent on July 29, 2026.

Tajinderpal Singh Toor secured automatic qualification with a best throw of 20.14 metres. The experienced Indian shot putter crossed the qualifying standard and booked his place in the medal round without having to depend on the overall rankings.

Samardeep Singh Gill joined him in the final after producing a best effort of 19.95 metres. Although his mark was below the automatic qualifying distance, it was strong enough to place him among the top 12 athletes advancing from the two qualification groups.

The result gives India two representatives in the men’s shot put final and creates another opportunity to add to the country’s athletics medal count. Toor brings considerable major-event experience, while Gill has emerged as one of India’s leading throwers following a series of strong domestic performances.

Animesh Kujur Records Season-Best in 200m

Indian sprinter Animesh Kujur also delivered an encouraging performance in the men’s 200m heats. He clocked a season-best time of 20.46 seconds and finished third in Heat 4.

At the time of the live update, Kujur was placed fifth overall among the athletes whose heats had been completed. His performance kept him in contention for progression, although his final qualification position depended on the remaining heats and official confirmation.

India Faces Setbacks in Weightlifting and Swimming

India’s afternoon session also brought disappointment in weightlifting. Sanjana was unable to register a successful lift in the women’s 77kg final after failing all three attempts at 94kg in the snatch.

She consequently recorded no total and could not participate in the clean and jerk segment of the competition.

In swimming, Sajan Prakash and Aneesh S Gowda competed in the men’s 200m freestyle heats. Gowda recorded a time of 1:51.64, while Prakash finished in 1:51.99.

Neither swimmer remained inside the top eight required to reach the final, bringing India’s individual campaign in the event to an end.

Indian Boxers Chase Guaranteed Medals

Boxing remained an important part of India’s medal push later in the day. Sakshi Choudhary and Arundhati Choudhary were scheduled to compete in their respective women’s quarterfinals, with victory guaranteeing each boxer at least a bronze medal.

Sachin Siwach, Ankush Yadav, Narender Berwal, and Jaismine Lamboria were also listed for quarterfinal bouts during the July 29 programme.

India had already secured guaranteed boxing medals through Preeti Pawar, Priya Ghanghas and Jadumani Singh Mandengbam, who reached their respective semifinals on July 28.

More CWG 2026 Medal Events Await India

Several Indian athletes were due to participate in medal events during the late-night and early-morning sessions in India.

Murali Sreeshankar and Lokesh Satyanathan were entered in the men’s long jump final, while Manpreet Kaur was scheduled to compete in the women’s shot put final.

Aryan Nehra was set to race in the men’s 1500m freestyle final, while Parul Choudhary was due to participate in the women’s 3000m steeplechase final. India also had further medal opportunities in para swimming and para athletics.

India entered the later session with 12 medals, comprising two gold, seven silver, and three bronze. With two shot putters safely through to the final and several medal events still to come, the July 29 programme offered further opportunities for the Indian contingent to improve its position in Glasgow.
