94-Year-Old Andhra Woman Gives Up US Citizenship To Return Home

A 94-year-old woman from Andhra Pradesh’s Bapatla district has regained Indian citizenship after giving up her US nationality, fulfilling her wish to spend her remaining years in her native village.

Kondragunta Mahalakshmamma, a native of Chintagumpala village, had moved to the United States with her son after the death of her husband. She later became a US citizen, but her attachment to her birthplace remained strong even after years abroad.

Final Wish To Return To Her Roots

Mahalakshmamma expressed her desire to return to India and spend the final phase of her life in her motherland. She also wanted her last rites to be performed in her native village.

Her appeal was made to the Bapatla district administration, after which the required legal procedures were taken forward.

Oath Taken At Bapatla Collectorate

At a ceremony held at the Bapatla Collectorate on Wednesday, the District Collector administered the oath of allegiance to Mahalakshmamma and handed over her Indian citizenship documents.

The moment has drawn attention because of the emotional reason behind her decision. For Mahalakshmamma, the move was not just a legal change but a return to the identity and land she deeply valued.

A Story Of Belonging And Identity

Her decision has touched many people, especially among Indian families living abroad. While thousands of Indians move overseas for family, work, or better opportunities, Mahalakshmamma’s story highlights the emotional bond many continue to hold with their homeland.

Her homecoming stands as a reminder that roots, memories, and belonging can remain powerful even after decades away from one’s native place.
