Historic First For St Stephen’s
St Stephen’s College, one of Delhi University’s most recognised institutions, is set to appoint Professor Susan Elias as its first woman principal in its 145-year history. She is expected to take charge from June 1 and will become the 14th principal of the college. Her appointment is being seen as a major milestone for gender representation in leadership roles at top Indian educational institutions.
Why DU Raised Objection
The appointment has also triggered a fresh disagreement between St Stephen’s College and Delhi University. DU has objected to the selection process, saying the committee should have followed University Grants Commission norms, including the presence of university-nominated experts and a vice-chancellor’s nominee. The university has also sought UGC intervention over the issue.
College Cites Minority Status
St Stephen’s College has defended the decision by referring to its minority institution status under Article 30(1) of the Constitution. The college maintains that it has administrative autonomy in appointments. The issue has again brought focus on the long-running debate between DU oversight and the autonomy of minority institutions.
Who Is Susan Elias?
Susan Elias is an academic and computer scientist with more than three decades of experience in higher education. She has held leadership roles in institutions including Chandigarh University and VIT Chennai. Her appointment now marks both a historic achievement and a new chapter in the DU-St Stephen’s governance debate.
