Kavitha Promises One Acre to Landless Poor, Sparks Debate

HYDERABAD: Telangana Rakshana Sena president Kalvakuntla Kavitha has promised one acre of land to every landless poor family in Telangana if her party comes to power, putting land redistribution at the centre of her emerging political agenda. Kavitha announced the proposed Bhu Lakshmi scheme on August 18, arguing that access to land is essential for economic security and meaningful social justice.

Kavitha One-Acre Promise Puts Land Back At Centre Of Politics

Kavitha said the proposal was prepared after studying land distribution issues and would target families without land across Telangana. The announcement gives her recently formed political outfit a major welfare plank as she attempts to build an identity distinct from established parties. Her party continues to be referred to as Telangana Rakshana Sena, with Kavitha as its president.

The promise is politically significant because land ownership remains closely linked with livelihood and economic security in rural areas. However, implementing a universal one-acre programme could require the government to identify large stretches of available land or purchase private property at prevailing market rates.

KCR Three-Acre Scheme Shows Challenges Of Land Distribution

Kavitha’s proposal is likely to invite comparisons with the three-acre land distribution programme launched under her father and former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao. The earlier scheme aimed to provide three acres of agricultural land to landless Scheduled Caste women, along with support for irrigation and land development.

Official information shows that 2,524 acres were distributed to 959 beneficiaries during the programme’s first year. Later reporting indicated that implementation struggled to match the original scale of the promise as land prices increased and suitable government land became harder to find.

That experience highlights the key challenge facing any new large-scale land distribution pledge: identifying beneficiaries, finding suitable land, funding purchases and ensuring that benefits reach eligible families without lengthy delays.

Kavitha Faces Test To Differentiate Her New Political Platform

Kavitha launched her own political platform in April 2026 after breaking away from the BRS. She has since outlined an agenda covering education, healthcare, employment, farmers and representation for marginalised communities. Her Panchanjanyam blueprint included free education, broader healthcare access, youth loans and measures aimed at farmers and Telangana movement participants.

The Bhu Lakshmi announcement expands that welfare-focused agenda, but it also creates a political test. Kavitha has positioned her party as an alternative to Telangana’s established political forces, meaning voters may expect policies that appear both different and practically achievable.

Bhu Lakshmi Feasibility Could Shape Kavitha’s Political Pitch

The success of the proposal may ultimately depend on details that are yet to emerge, including eligibility rules, the number of potential beneficiaries, available government land, estimated expenditure and whether private land would need to be acquired.

A clearly funded implementation plan could turn Bhu Lakshmi into a distinctive social-justice programme. Without such details, opponents are likely to compare it with earlier welfare promises that encountered implementation difficulties.

For Kavitha, the larger challenge is therefore not simply making a major promise but demonstrating how her new political approach differs in execution. As Telangana’s political competition intensifies, the feasibility of Bhu Lakshmi could become an early measure of whether her party can convert an ambitious welfare pitch into a credible alternative for voters.
