Rahul Gandhi NEET Protest Triggers Fresh Congress-BJP Clash

Rahul Gandhi’s detention during an Opposition protest near the Prime Minister’s residence has intensified the political battle over alleged NEET and examination irregularities. Congress says it is demanding accountability, while the government has accused the party of prioritising political spectacle.

New Delhi, July 22, 2026: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has accused Rahul Gandhi and the Congress of using students’ concerns for political gains after Opposition leaders staged a protest near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official residence.

Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and several other Opposition leaders were detained by Delhi Police on Tuesday, July 21, after attempting to move towards Lok Kalyan Marg.

The leaders were protesting the police action against participants in the CJP’s “Chalo Sansad” march held a day earlier. They were released several hours after their detention.

Detention Images Draw National Attention

Images from the protest showed Rahul Gandhi sitting and lying on the road as police personnel attempted to remove him from the high-security area.

He was later carried towards a police vehicle and suffered a nosebleed during the confrontation. Blood marks were visible on his white T-shirt, while his clothes appeared soiled.

Priyanka Gandhi was also seen holding onto the door of a police bus while being detained.

The visuals quickly gained attention on television and social media, bringing Rahul Gandhi and the Congress back to the centre of the political debate over examination irregularities.

Congress leaders alleged that the government had prevented the Opposition from raising students’ concerns through Parliament and authorised protests.

Rahul Gandhi said the march towards the Prime Minister’s residence was intended to demand answers over the alleged mistreatment of protesting students.

Pradhan Accuses Congress of Seeking Headlines

Responding to the demonstration, Dharmendra Pradhan accused Congress of choosing political confrontation instead of parliamentary debate.

He said the government had already expressed its willingness to discuss the NEET issue in Parliament.

According to Pradhan, Congress was attempting to use students as political tools and create disruption during the Monsoon Session.

The Education Minister said students deserved examination reforms, accountability, and clear solutions rather than political slogans.

He maintained that the government remained committed to discussing genuine student concerns and strengthening the examination system.

Government Flags Security Concerns

Government sources also criticised the protest near the Prime Minister’s residence, describing it as a security concern.

They argued that demonstrations outside the official residences of political leaders could create a dangerous precedent.

Congress, however, maintained that the unusual protest was necessary because other attempts to raise the issue had allegedly been blocked.

The two sides have since presented competing versions of the incident.

Congress has portrayed Rahul Gandhi’s detention as an example of the government suppressing Opposition voices, while the Centre has accused the party of deliberately creating a political spectacle.

Protest Helps Congress Regain Political Space

The detention also helped Congress regain visibility on the examination controversy after the CJP protests at Jantar Mantar attracted significant public attention.

Congress had initially maintained some distance from the CJP movement amid speculation over the organisation’s political links.

Rahul Gandhi had also stayed away from the protest site, although Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera later visited and met activist Sonam Wangchuk.

By taking the protest close to the Prime Minister’s residence, Rahul Gandhi placed himself at the centre of the campaign and shifted Congress’s demand for accountability directly towards the Prime Minister.

Political observers noted that the widely circulated images of Rahul Gandhi being carried away by police could strengthen Congress’s claim that it was being prevented from raising matters of public concern.

Chalo Sansad March Led to Clashes

The political confrontation followed the CJP’s “Chalo Sansad” march on Monday, July 20.

The organisation had called the march on the opening day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session to protest alleged irregularities in examinations such as NEET and demand Pradhan’s resignation.

The demonstration later turned violent as protesters attempted to move towards Parliament.

Police used tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd. Police vehicles and public property were reportedly damaged, while more than 70 people were detained.

Officials claimed that over 100 police and paramilitary personnel were injured during the clashes.

NEET Row Becomes Wider Political Battle

The controversy has now expanded beyond the original allegations concerning examination irregularities.

Congress says public protests are necessary to secure answers and accountability for students.

The government insists that the issue should be discussed in Parliament and addressed through institutional reforms.
