New Bengaluru–Mumbai Express Flagged Off, Vande Bharat Sleeper Soon

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw virtually flagged off the new Bengaluru–Mumbai Express train on Sunday, May 17, 2026, marking a major boost to rail connectivity between Karnataka and Maharashtra. The new service is expected to benefit passengers travelling between Bengaluru and Mumbai, two of India’s busiest urban and business hubs. According to officials, the train strengthens direct connectivity and addresses a long-pending demand from passengers in both South and North Karnataka.

Vande Bharat Sleeper Service Expected Soon
During the launch, Ashwini Vaishnaw also announced that the Bengaluru–Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper service is expected to start soon. The proposed sleeper service is likely to offer a faster and more comfortable overnight travel option for long-distance passengers on this important route. The announcement has created interest among frequent travellers who currently depend on existing express services between the two cities.

Karnataka Rail Network Gets Major Push
Vaishnaw said around 1,750 km of new railway lines have been constructed in Karnataka since 2014. He also highlighted progress on suburban rail, station redevelopment, electrification work and proposed high-speed rail corridors. The Hassan–Mangaluru electrification work has been completed and is under testing, while multiple railway projects are being taken up to improve passenger convenience and regional connectivity across Karnataka.
