Balen Shah Faces Protests as Nepal Unrest Disrupts India Border Supplies

Protests have erupted in Nepal against Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba following the strict enforcement of customs duties on goods entering from India. The move has disrupted the long-standing free flow of goods across the Indo-Nepal border, triggering widespread anger among residents in border regions.

For decades, many in Nepal have relied on Indian border markets for affordable essentials, including groceries, medicines, clothing, and household items. Under the new rule, goods valued above NPR 100 are subject to customs duties ranging from 5% to 80%, significantly increasing the cost of everyday purchases.

The sudden enforcement has sparked protests in border towns like Birgunj as well as in the capital, Kathmandu. Residents say the policy has added financial strain, with some describing it as an “unofficial blockade” that disrupts daily life and cross-border access to basic goods.

Videos circulating on social media show clashes between protesters and security personnel at border checkpoints. In several instances, even small quantities of goods—including snacks—have reportedly been seized, further intensifying public anger.

The government has defended the crackdown, saying stricter enforcement is needed to curb revenue losses and support domestic businesses. However, the decision has drawn political criticism and public backlash, with growing calls for the policy to be reconsidered as tensions continue to rise.
