Australia Keeps Permanent Migration Cap At 185,000 In 2026–27 Budget

Australia’s 2026–27 federal budget has confirmed that the permanent migration program will remain capped at 185,000 places. More than 70 percent of these places will be reserved for skilled migrants as the government focuses on filling labour shortages in key sectors.

The government plans to prioritise onshore applicants across both skilled and family visa streams. The remaining offshore places will mainly be allocated to highly skilled migrants who can support Australia’s long-term workforce needs.

Construction And Trade Workers In Focus

A major part of the migration reform is aimed at addressing shortages in construction and electrical trades. The government will spend $85.2 million to speed up skills assessments and occupational licensing for migrant trade workers.

These changes could help qualified workers enter the Australian workforce up to six months faster and may support around 4,000 additional skilled trades workers each year.

Working Holiday And Student Visa Changes

The budget also includes changes to the Working Holiday Maker program to better manage visa numbers and ensure fairer access. Expanded ballot systems may be used to control demand in the program.

Student visa applications will face stronger scrutiny, with $19.8 million allocated over four years to protect the integrity of Australia’s international student visa system.

English Support For Migrants

From 2029, Australia will introduce a new English-language program with flexible tuition and support services. The program is expected to help migrants improve workplace communication, employment outcomes, and social participation.

Overall, the 2026–27 migration changes show Australia’s focus on skilled workers, stronger visa checks, and better support for migrants already in the country.
