Revathy, Padmapriya Quit Association of Malayalam Movie Artists Over Safety And Accountability Issues

Actors Revathy and Padmapriya Janakiraman have resigned from the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), citing concerns over safety, dignity, accountability, and equal treatment in the Malayalam film industry.

Their resignation highlights growing questions over whether AMMA has done enough to address workplace safety and structural inequality faced by women artists.

Revathy And Padmapriya Step Down From AMMA

Revathy and Padmapriya announced their decision through a joint statement shared on social media. They said the move was not taken in anger or haste, but came after years of disappointment with the organisation’s response to key concerns raised by women in the industry.

The actors said their demand had always been simple: safer workplaces, dignity, accountability, and equal treatment for all members. According to them, these were basic values that any artist’s body should protect.

Actors Raise Questions Over Safety And Equal Treatment

In their statement, the actors said that asking for change had often resulted in silence, distance, and isolation. They suggested that AMMA had failed to create meaningful reform despite repeated concerns from women professionals.

Revathy and Padmapriya also criticised what they described as patriarchy and power politics within the organisation. They said AMMA was meant to be a collective voice for all actors, but had moved away from its founding ideals.

Link To Hema Committee Debate

The resignations come at a time when Malayalam cinema continues to face public debate over the Hema Committee Report, workplace safety, and gender inequality in the industry.

Both Revathy and Padmapriya are associated with the Women in Cinema Collective, which has repeatedly spoken about women’s safety, accountability, and fair treatment in Malayalam cinema.

Decision Not A Defeat, Say Actors

The actors said walking away from AMMA should not be seen as a defeat. Instead, they described it as a decision based on self-respect and clarity.

They also made it clear that they would continue to work in cinema and support better storytelling, fairer workplaces, and a more equal industry.

Why This Resignation Matters

Revathy and Padmapriya’s exit is significant because both actors have been strong voices for reform in Malayalam cinema. Their resignation has once again brought attention to the need for safer workplaces and stronger accountability in film industry organisations.

The development also puts pressure on AMMA to address concerns raised by women artists and rebuild trust among its members.
