OpenAI has promoted infrastructure executive Uday Ruddarraju to CTO, Compute, about a year after he joined from xAI. The CBIT and University of Minnesota alumnus will help lead the expansion of compute, networking, storage, and data-centre systems.

New Delhi, July 22, 2026: OpenAI has promoted Indian-origin technology executive Uday Ruddarraju to Chief Technology Officer, Compute, placing him in charge of expanding the infrastructure required to train and operate the company’s advanced artificial intelligence systems.

What Uday Ruddarraju’s New Role Means for OpenAI

Ruddarraju’s designation is specifically CTO, Compute, rather than the overall chief technology officer of OpenAI. His responsibilities will focus on the computing systems that support the company’s artificial intelligence models.

These systems include large GPU clusters, high-speed networks, storage platforms, distributed computing technology and data-centre infrastructure. Together, they provide the enormous computing capacity required to train and run frontier AI models.

Ruddarraju announced the promotion after spending approximately one year at OpenAI as Head of Compute and Infrastructure. He said the company was working to build a larger compute footprint so that advanced AI could support more people and professional workflows.

From Hyderabad’s CBIT to OpenAI Leadership

Ruddarraju completed his Computer Science engineering degree at Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology in Hyderabad.

His career journey has attracted attention because he did not study at an IIT, NIT, or IIIT, institutions commonly associated with prominent Indian technology leaders.

He later moved to the United States and earned a master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota. His rise reflects the growing importance of professional experience and specialised infrastructure expertise in the global technology sector.

Career Across eBay, Robinhood and xAI

Ruddarraju began his career with engineering experience that included an internship at Amazon. He later joined eBay in 2013 as a software engineer working on cloud infrastructure.

During more than five years at eBay, he progressed through senior technical roles and contributed to cloud and platform systems supporting the company’s global e-commerce operations.

In 2018, he joined Robinhood as a Staff Software Engineer. He eventually became Senior Director of Engineering and Head of Infrastructure, leading systems that supported the financial platform during periods of rapid expansion and heavy user activity.

Ruddarraju moved to Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI in 2024 as Head of Infrastructure Engineering. His work involved developing the large computing systems required to train artificial intelligence models.

He joined OpenAI in 2025 as Head of Compute and Infrastructure before being promoted to CTO, Compute, approximately one year later.

Why Compute Infrastructure Is Critical for AI

Artificial intelligence models depend on more than researchers, algorithms, and software. They require large numbers of specialised processors operating together through reliable networks and storage systems.
