Suhrawardy Avenue Renamed Gopal Mukherjee Road, Sparks Kolkata History Row

Kolkata, June 22: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s decision to rename Suhrawardy Avenue in Park Circus as Gopal Mukherjee Road on June 20, 2026, has triggered a political and historical debate in West Bengal.

The change has been welcomed by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who described it as a step towards correcting a historical wrong. However, opposition leaders and critics have questioned the basis of the decision, saying the road’s old name may have been linked to Hassan Shaheed Suhrawardy, a respected academic and former vice-chancellor of Calcutta University, and not Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, the controversial former premier of Bengal.

Kolkata Road Renaming Triggers Debate

The renamed road is located near the busy Park Circus area and has long been known as Suhrawardy Avenue. The new name, Gopal Mukherjee Road, honours Gopal Chandra Mukherjee, popularly known as Gopal Patha.

Supporters of the change say Gopal Mukherjee deserves recognition for his role during the communal violence that shook Kolkata in 1946. They argue that the renaming brings attention to a figure they believe was ignored in public memory for decades.

But the move has also sparked criticism from opposition parties, who say road renaming should be based on verified historical records and not political interpretation.

Hassan Suhrawardy Or Huseyn Suhrawardy?

The central point of the controversy is the identity behind the original road name. Critics argue that Suhrawardy Avenue was named after Hassan Shaheed Suhrawardy, an educationist, diplomat, and former vice-chancellor of Calcutta University.

This is different from Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, the former premier of Bengal, whose name is often linked to the 1946 Direct Action Day violence and remains highly controversial in Bengal’s political memory.

Opposition leaders have accused the government of confusing two different members of the Suhrawardy family. They say that if the road was named after Hassan Suhrawardy, then presenting the renaming as a correction of Huseyn Suhrawardy’s legacy may be historically misleading.

Who Was Gopal Mukherjee?

Gopal Chandra Mukherjee, better known as Gopal Patha, is remembered by some groups as a defender of Hindu neighbourhoods during the 1946 communal violence in Kolkata. For his supporters, renaming the road after him is a long-delayed recognition of a local figure connected to a turbulent period in Bengal’s history.

At the same time, Gopal Mukherjee remains a polarising figure because of his association with a violent and sensitive chapter of the pre-Partition period. Critics say that any decision to honour such figures in public spaces must be handled with caution and historical clarity.

BJP Defends The Move As Historical Correction

The BJP has defended the renaming as a symbolic correction of Bengal’s public memory. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari welcomed the decision and said it honoured a person who stood up during one of Kolkata’s most difficult periods.

The party has framed the move as part of a wider effort to recognise historical figures it believes were overlooked. For the BJP, the renaming is not merely a civic change but a message about how Bengal should remember its past.

Opposition Questions Historical Basis

The Trinamool Congress, Congress, and Left leaders have criticised the move, arguing that the old name’s historical background has not been properly addressed.

They say the decision risks turning a complex historical issue into a political slogan. Critics also pointed out that the distinction between Hassan Suhrawardy and Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy should have been clarified before the road was renamed.

At the time of writing, a detailed public clarification specifically addressing the Hassan-Huseyn Suhrawardy distinction was not immediately available in the cited reports.

Public Memory And Politics In Bengal

The Suhrawardy Avenue renaming row shows how names of roads and public spaces can become powerful political symbols. In Bengal, where memories of Partition, communal violence, and intellectual history remain deeply layered, even a civic decision can quickly turn into a wider debate.

For now, Suhrawardy Avenue has officially become Gopal Mukherjee Road. But the controversy is likely to continue as political parties, historians, and citizens debate whether the change represents historical correction or historical confusion.
