Velachery–Tambaram Road To Be Named After Major Mukund Varadharajan
The Velachery–Tambaram High Road in Chennai is set to be named after Major Mukund Varadharajan, the Indian Army officer who was killed in action and later honoured with the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award.
The Tambaram Corporation Council has approved a resolution to name the 16-km arterial stretch as “Major Mukund Varadharajan Road”. The move has been taken as a tribute to the officer’s courage and sacrifice.
Council Approves Road Renaming
According to the civic decision, the proposal was taken up after approval from the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department. The road is one of the important routes connecting Velachery and Tambaram, serving thousands of commuters every day.
The renaming is expected to give the busy road a strong public memory link with Major Mukund Varadharajan’s service to the nation.
Tribute To A Brave Officer
Major Mukund Varadharajan remains widely remembered for his bravery and dedication while serving in the Indian Army. He was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra for his courage in action.
By naming a key Chennai road after him, the civic body aims to honour his sacrifice and keep his legacy visible in public life.
Local Importance Of The Road
The Velachery–Tambaram High Road is a major link for residents, office workers, and daily commuters in southern Chennai. The new name is expected to become part of regular civic and transport references once the renaming process is completed.
The decision has also drawn attention because it connects a major public road with the memory of a decorated army officer from Tamil Nadu.
