Instagram Users Concerned as DM Encryption Protection Is Removed

Instagram Ends End-to-End Encryption Support for Direct Messages

Instagram has reportedly removed end-to-end encryption support for direct messages, a move that could significantly change how private conversations are handled on the platform. The update, said to have taken effect on May 8, 2026, ends a feature that had been available for Instagram chats since 2023.

With the removal of end-to-end encryption, Instagram DMs may no longer remain fully private, as the platform could gain greater ability to scan conversations for harmful or illegal content. Meta had earlier informed users about the change and advised them to download or back up important chats and media if needed.

The decision is believed to be linked to rising concerns around online child safety, abuse prevention, and the detection of harmful content. Governments in multiple countries have been urging tech platforms to strengthen measures against child sexual abuse material (CSAM), grooming, and harassment within messaging services.

Industry observers say the move may help Meta better identify suspicious or abusive activity on Instagram chats. However, it has also drawn criticism from privacy advocates, who argue that removing encryption weakens user privacy and could increase the risk of message access by third parties.

For now, the change applies only to Instagram direct messages. Meta has not announced similar updates for its other messaging platforms, such as WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.
