IIM Bangalore Indonesia Campus: India’s Education Push Abroad

IIM Bangalore To Open Indonesia Campus As India Expands Education Footprint Abroad

India’s higher education push overseas is gaining fresh momentum, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi announcing that the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore will set up a campus in Indonesia. The announcement was made in Jakarta on July 7, 2026, during a joint press statement with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

The proposed IIM Bangalore Indonesia campus is expected to serve students and working professionals from Indonesia as well as the wider ASEAN region. The move is being seen as another step in India’s effort to take its premier education brands beyond national borders and strengthen academic ties with partner countries.

IIM Bangalore Indonesia Campus To Begin In Phases

According to IIM Bangalore, the overseas campus will be rolled out in two phases. In the first phase, the institute will offer short-duration Executive Education Programmes for senior professionals and future business leaders. In the second phase, IIM Bangalore plans to introduce degree-granting programmes.

The proposed campus is linked to a recently signed MoU between IIM Bangalore and the Singhasari Special Economic Zone in Indonesia, where the international campus is expected to be located. The agreement was signed on July 6, 2026, in Jakarta.

Focus On AI, Digital Transformation And Leadership

The curriculum at the IIMB Singhasari campus is expected to cover core management areas along with future-focused subjects such as artificial intelligence, digital transformation, global supply chains, climate and sustainability, and healthcare.

IIM Bangalore said the initiative will also support research collaboration, faculty development, consulting partnerships, policy engagement, student exchange, and stronger industry connections across Indonesia and the ASEAN region.

India’s IIT And IIM Campuses Abroad

The Indonesian plan adds to the growing list of Indian higher education institutions expanding overseas. IIT Madras Zanzibar, established in 2023, is recognised as India’s first international IIT campus and offers programmes in areas such as data science, artificial intelligence, chemical process engineering, and ocean structures.

IIT Delhi also operates an international campus in Abu Dhabi. The campus began operations in January 2024 with an M.Tech programme and was officially inaugurated on September 2, 2024, with B.Tech cohorts in Computer Science & Engineering and Energy Engineering.

Among IIMs, IIM Ahmedabad opened its first international campus at Dubai International Academic City in September 2025. The campus was inaugurated by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and marked a major overseas milestone for Indian management education.

Why This Matters

The IIM Bangalore Indonesia campus highlights India’s growing ambition to position its top institutes as global education brands. For Indonesia and the ASEAN region, it could create new opportunities in executive learning, leadership training, digital business education, and cross-border academic exchange.

With IITs already present in Zanzibar and Abu Dhabi, and IIM Ahmedabad operating in Dubai, IIM Bangalore’s Indonesia plan shows that India’s premier institutions are moving from domestic excellence to international presence.
