Swollen Ankles Warning Sign: When Foot Swelling May Point To Heart Or Liver Trouble

Swollen Ankles May Be More Than Tired Feet: Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore

Persistent ankle swelling may look harmless, but doctors say it can sometimes point to deeper heart or liver-related health issues.

Swollen Ankles Should Not Always Be Ignored

Ankle swelling is often blamed on long-standing, hot weather, tight footwear or minor strain. In many cases, it settles with rest. But if swelling stays for a long time, keeps coming back, becomes painful or appears with other symptoms, it should not be ignored.

This swelling is known as edema, where fluid builds up in body tissues. It may appear as puffy ankles, feet or legs, tight skin, heaviness, pain, or marks when the skin is pressed.

Link With Heart And Liver Problems

One serious reason for swollen ankles can be heart failure. When the heart cannot pump blood effectively, fluid may collect in the legs, ankles, and feet. Warning signs may also include breathlessness, tiredness, dizziness, or discomfort while lying down.

Swelling can also be seen in advanced liver disease, including cirrhosis. Liver damage may affect fluid balance and cause swelling in the legs or abdomen. Fatty liver is often silent in the early stage, so symptoms like weakness, weight loss, abdominal discomfort, or swelling need medical attention.

What You Can Do

Raising the legs, moving regularly, reducing salt intake, and using compression stockings may help mild swelling. However, sudden, painful or persistent swelling should be checked by a doctor.
