Pakistan-occupied Kashmir has been placed on edge after violent clashes in Rawalakot left several people reported dead and many others injured, ahead of a major shutdown call. The unrest broke out after authorities banned the Joint Awami Action Committee, a civil society group that has led protests over political and economic issues in the region.

Reports said protesters and security forces clashed near a hospital morgue after the body of an activist was taken there following an earlier shooting incident. Security has now been tightened across several areas, with restrictions on gatherings and disruptions to mobile data services.

Why Are People Protesting?

The latest anger is linked to the reservation of 12 legislative assembly seats for refugees living outside Kashmir but elsewhere in Pakistan. JAAC leaders argue that the system weakens local representation. The group has also raised concerns over inflation, electricity shortages, unemployment, and political marginalisation.

The unrest comes ahead of elections scheduled for July 27, 2026, increasing fears of more tension if talks do not begin soon. Rights groups have urged authorities to avoid further escalation and address public grievances through dialogue.
