Cancer Drug Shortage In India Raises Alarm As Chemo Patients Search For Key Medicines

Cisplatin, Carboplatin Shortage Hits Cancer Care

A shortage of two widely used chemotherapy medicines has triggered concern as cancer patients struggle to find stocks across India.

A shortage of key cancer drugs in India has raised serious concerns among doctors and patients. Two commonly used chemotherapy medicines, Cisplatin and Carboplatin, have reportedly become difficult to find in many pharmacies over the last two weeks.

The shortage is worrying because these medicines are used in the treatment of several cancers, including oral, lung, cervical, oesophageal, ovarian, and breast cancer. Doctors have said many patients are now moving from one medical store to another to find the required doses.

Why The Shortage Matters

According to the report, oncologists in Delhi and Mumbai have warned that lower doses are especially hard to find, while some higher doses may still be available in limited places. Wholesalers and stockists are also said to be running out of supply.

The issue is linked to the sharp rise in platinum prices, as platinum is a key raw material used in these medicines. At the same time, these drugs come under price control, which limits how much companies can increase prices.

Patients Face Treatment Worry

The shortage has created anxiety for cancer patients who depend on timely chemotherapy schedules. For many patients, even a short delay in chemotherapy can create fear and uncertainty during an already difficult treatment journey

Patients should not change, delay, or replace any cancer medicine on their own and must follow their oncologist’s advice.
