TVK Claims Majority Support, Vijay Likely to Stake Claim in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu’s political landscape saw a dramatic turn on Friday as Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay moved closer to forming the next government after securing support from key parties and reportedly reaching the majority mark of 118 in the Assembly.
According to TVK sources, Vijay has sought an appointment with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at 4:30 pm and is expected to stake a claim to form the government. The development follows support extended by the Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), adding to the backing already provided by the Indian National Congress.
With TVK holding 107 MLAs, the combined support from Congress, CPI, CPM, and VCK is understood to have taken the alliance past the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly. Leaders of the supporting parties are also expected to jointly announce their decision at a press conference, signalling a formal consolidation of the alliance.
The developments have triggered heightened political activity across Chennai, with TVK supporters gathering near the Raj Bhavan and protests reported in parts of the city. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said it would not attempt to form the government, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) dismissed speculation about any understanding with the DMK amid the rapidly evolving political situation.
