Toughest Exams In Southeast Asia And South Korea Students Fear Most

Why These Exams Create Massive Pressure

Across Southeast Asia and South Korea, national entrance exams continue to shape university admissions, scholarships, and career opportunities for millions of students. These highly competitive exams are known for long preparation hours, strict evaluation systems, and enormous pressure on students and families. In many countries, a single score can decide entry into top universities and future career paths.

Supporters believe standardised exams create a fair merit-based system for selecting students. Critics, however, argue that the intense competition increases stress levels and forces students into years of coaching and academic pressure. Several countries have also discussed reforms due to concerns over student mental health and unequal access to educational resources.

Toughest Exams Across Asia

China’s Gaokao is widely considered one of the toughest exams in the world, with more than 13 million students competing annually for limited university seats. South Korea’s CSAT, also known as the Suneung exam, is famous for its intense pressure and strict exam atmosphere. Flights are delayed during listening sections, offices open late, and families closely follow students throughout the exam day.

In Southeast Asia, Indonesia’s Ujian Nasional remains an important academic milestone for high school students, while Vietnam’s Baccalaureate exam is known for heavy competition in university admissions. Malaysia’s STPM is also regarded as academically demanding and equivalent to international A-level qualifications.

Education experts say these exams continue to influence student culture across Asia despite growing discussions about reducing academic stress and reforming university entrance systems.
