Coke, Pepsi And Red Bull Add QR Codes For Ingredient Transparency In US
Major beverage companies, including Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Red Bull, and Keurig Dr Pepper, are adding QR codes to product packaging in the United States to provide consumers with easier access to ingredient information.
The move comes as shoppers are paying closer attention to what goes into packaged food and drinks. By scanning the QR codes, consumers will be directed to GoodToKnowFacts.org, a website created by the American Beverage Association to explain common ingredients used in beverages.
QR Codes To Give Ingredient Details
The new QR code initiative is designed to help consumers understand more about ingredients found in packaged drinks. The Good to Know website provides information on more than 140 ingredients, including descriptions, examples of where they are used and details about regulatory approvals.
The website refers to assessments by food safety authorities such as the US Food and Drug Administration, the European Food Safety Authority, and Health Canada.
Major Beverage Brands Join The Rollout
Participating brands include Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Dr Pepper, Celsius, Monster Energy, Polar Beverages, and Red Bull.
According to the American Beverage Association, PepsiCo has already linked its beverage QR codes to the website. Coca-Cola is expected to complete its rollout this month, while Keurig Dr Pepper plans to add the feature later this year.
Growing Demand For Food Transparency
The rollout comes at a time when ingredient transparency has become an important consumer issue in the United States. Many buyers now check labels carefully before purchasing beverages, while nutrition-scanning apps have also become more popular.
The American Beverage Association said the initiative is aimed at giving consumers more transparent, consistent and easily available information about beverage ingredients.
Website Will Not Replace Product Labels
The Good to Know website gives general information about ingredients, but it does not provide a complete ingredient breakdown for each product. Consumers will still need to check product labels to know the exact ingredients in a specific drink.
Some public health experts have also advised consumers to refer to multiple sources of information, especially when assessing food safety and nutrition claims.
Debate Over Beverage Ingredients Continues
The QR code rollout also comes as food and beverage ingredient transparency remains a major topic in the United States. Health officials and consumer groups have raised concerns over sugar levels, additives, and labelling practices in packaged drinks.
For beverage companies, the initiative is being presented as a step toward clearer communication with consumers. For buyers, it may offer a faster way to understand ingredients used in popular soft drinks, energy drinks, and other packaged beverages.
