A major “digital arrest” scam has come to light, highlighting the growing threat of cyber fraud in India. In this case, a victim was cheated out of over ₹2 crore after being manipulated by fraudsters posing as officials. Authorities later cracked the case, arresting multiple accused and recovering a significant portion of the stolen money.
The fraud began with a call from someone claiming to be linked to a courier service, alleging that a parcel in the victim’s name contained illegal substances. The call was then transferred to another individual posing as a crime branch official. Using fear tactics—threats of arrest and legal consequences—the scammers created panic and pushed the victim into compliance.
Under sustained pressure, the victim was persuaded to transfer large sums of money to multiple accounts as part of a fake “investigation process.” This tactic, commonly known as a “digital arrest,” involves keeping victims under constant psychological control through calls and messages while extracting money under the guise of official procedures.
Following a detailed investigation, cybercrime police arrested five individuals involved in the racket, including one accused operating from abroad. Officials also recovered a substantial portion of the defrauded amount and seized assets linked to the suspects.
The case serves as a strong reminder for the public to stay alert against unsolicited calls and online threats. Authorities have urged citizens not to share personal or financial information and to verify any claims made by unknown callers—especially those involving law enforcement or urgent legal action—before responding.
