A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has sentenced Mohammed Shariq to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with the 2022 Mangaluru cooker blast case. The court also imposed a fine of ₹92,000 after the accused pleaded guilty.
The incident occurred on November 19, 2022, near Kankanady in Mangaluru. Investigators said Shariq was allegedly en route to plant an explosive device near the Kadri Manjunath Temple when the bomb exploded prematurely inside an autorickshaw, injuring both him and the driver.
Following the blast, Shariq was treated for injuries before being taken into custody by the NIA, which later filed a detailed chargesheet outlining the planning and execution of the attack. Authorities also recovered materials used for making explosives and fake identification documents during the investigation.
Originally from Shivamogga district, Shariq had previously come under the radar of law enforcement agencies. Investigators stated that he was allegedly radicalised and had links to activities related to the planning of the blast, with evidence pointing to a broader conspiracy.
Based on the findings and the accused’s guilty plea, the court delivered its verdict, marking a significant step in the case. The judgment underscores the importance of timely investigation and reinforces ongoing efforts to counter such security threats.
