In a major push to strengthen its digital economy, the Maharashtra government has approved a comprehensive Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy with a proposed investment of ₹10,000 crore. Cleared on Wednesday, the policy focuses on building robust AI infrastructure, encouraging innovation, and promoting responsible governance across sectors.
The initiative includes the establishment of 6 AI Excellence Centres and 5 AI Innovation Cities, aimed at accelerating technological growth and adoption. Aligned with the India AI Mission, the policy is expected to transform sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and manufacturing, while building on Maharashtra’s digital economy valued at around ₹6 lakh crore.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the policy’s core objective is to position the state as a “Reference State” for ethical and inclusive AI development. It also targets the creation of 1.5 lakh jobs and aims to support around 5,000 startups and MSMEs, strengthening the state’s innovation ecosystem.
To support implementation, the government plans to deploy 2,000 GPUs, develop 50 AI tools and use-cases, and provide financial assistance including subsidies for MSMEs. The policy also includes skill development for 2 lakh youth, a ₹500 crore AI Startup Venture Fund, and multiple incentives for industries, reinforcing Maharashtra’s ambition to emerge as a leading hub for artificial intelligence.
