Mirzapur The Movie Review: Bhaukaal, Action and Nostalgia Return

Mirzapur The Movie Review: Bhaukaal, Action and Nostalgia Return

Plot

Mirzapur: The Movie unfolds as a parallel story alongside the events of Season 1 rather than functioning as a sequel or continuation. The battle for control of Mirzapur and Purvanchal remains at the centre, bringing back familiar characters including Munna, Sweety and Bablu. Guddu and Munna’s rivalry, family conflicts, power struggles, betrayals and ambitions drive the story, while Jeetendra Kumar steps into the role of Bablu.

Overview

After three successful OTT seasons, Mirzapur makes its theatrical debut with the violence, dark humour, power games and memorable characters associated with the franchise. The film delivers plenty of nostalgia and mass entertainment but tries to accommodate too many characters and storylines, making the narrative feel overextended.

Performances

Pankaj Tripathi once again commands attention as Kaleen Bhaiya with his restrained expressions and intimidating screen presence. Ali Fazal and Divyendu Sharma comfortably return as Guddu and Munna, with their rivalry remaining one of the strongest aspects of the movie.

Ravi Kishan makes an energetic impact as a stylish antagonist, while Rasika Dugal receives a more substantial and independent character arc as Beena. However, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Shweta Tripathi and Harshika Gaur have comparatively limited screen time.

Technical Aspects

The action sequences carry the expected Mirzapur intensity, while the Rajasthan portions stand out visually. The film successfully retains the gritty and pulpy atmosphere of the series. Its dialogues, action and production scale work well for the theatrical format, although some sequences feel unnecessarily stretched.

Music

The music complements the film's swagger and mass appeal. Rap tracks add energy to several sequences, while the return of Vaaroon offers familiarity for fans. Sanson Ki Mala provides a softer emotional touch towards the ending.

Editing

Editing is one of the film's major weaknesses. The narrative contains too many characters, relationships and subplots for a single theatrical film. Several portions could have been shortened, and sequences such as the late car chase feel forced. A tighter edit could have significantly improved the pace and impact.

Positives

  • Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Divyendu Sharma
  • Guddu-Munna rivalry
  • Ravi Kishan's energetic performance
  • Rasika Dugal's stronger character arc
  • Entertaining action and humour
  • Nostalgia for Mirzapur fans
  • Strong climax
  • Impressive Rajasthan visuals

Negatives

  • Excessive runtime
  • Overcrowded storyline
  • Uneven pacing
  • Weak editing
  • Too many subplots
  • Limited roles for some female characters
  • Certain sequences feel forced

Analysis

Mirzapur: The Movie largely succeeds in recreating the chaos, violence, humour and larger-than-life characters that made the streaming series popular. Its biggest advantage is familiarity: established rivalries and returning characters immediately reconnect viewers with the franchise.

However, the transition from long-form OTT storytelling to cinema is not entirely smooth. The film tries to give almost every character and relationship substantial attention, resulting in a bloated runtime of more than three hours. Despite this, its performances, mass moments, music and crowd-pleasing climax make it an entertaining experience, particularly for existing Mirzapur fans.

Bottomline: Bloody Nostalgia
