Awarapan 2 Review: Emraan Hashmi Shines, Third Act Falters

Awarapan 2 Review: Emraan Hashmi Shines, Third Act Falters

Plot

Shivam Pandit returns as a lethal but emotionally scarred man who becomes involved in the search for a little girl trapped by a human trafficking gang. His journey brings him face-to-face with dangerous mobsters led by Zorawar, while old memories of betrayal and lost love continue to haunt him. The film also introduces Zara, who wants to escape her criminal past, along with rival gang members, an Interpol officer and other figures caught in the underworld conflict.

Performances

Emraan Hashmi remains the strongest part of the film and slips comfortably back into the role of Shivam. His restrained pain, brooding presence and familiarity with wounded anti-hero roles help hold the narrative together. Puran Gabbi makes an impact as the violent and unpredictable Zorawar, bringing energy to the antagonist role. Disha Patani gets a softer, more emotionally driven part, though her character is not explored deeply enough. Shabana Azmi brings authority and presence but is underused. Suvinder Vicky, Vijayant Kohli, Atul Kumar and Aniruddh Rawal provide capable support.

Technical Aspects

Nitin Kakkar gives the film a polished visual treatment, especially in the first half. The Bangkok locations are used effectively and add texture to the crime-thriller setting. Slick production values, stylish action staging and strong visual compositions keep the film attractive even when the screenplay starts weakening.

Music

The Sufi-inspired music fits the emotional world of Shivam Pandit and connects the sequel tonally with the original film. However, the music mostly works as background support rather than delivering a truly memorable soundtrack.

Editing

The film moves smoothly in the first half but becomes noticeably sluggish later. The third act stretches beyond its emotional and narrative strength, making several sequences feel repetitive. A tighter edit could have preserved the film’s early momentum and reduced the impact of the screenplay gaps.

Positives

  • Emraan Hashmi’s strong central performance
  • Stylish Bangkok setting
  • Effective first half
  • Puran Gabbi’s villainous presence
  • Slick production values
  • Good supporting cast
  • Strong crime-thriller atmosphere

Negatives

  • Long and dull third act
  • Visible screenplay loopholes
  • Shabana Azmi is underused
  • Disha Patani’s character lacks depth
  • Music remains mostly functional
  • Supporting actors are not fully utilised
  • Momentum drops sharply after the interval

Analysis

Awarapan 2 works best when it trusts Emraan Hashmi’s screen presence and keeps the narrative moving through crime, action and emotional conflict. The sequel retains the wounded-hero tone of the original while adding a slicker contemporary visual style. The first half benefits from fresh locations, a strong villain and a capable ensemble. The problem begins when the screenplay starts stretching familiar genre beats without enough new material to support them. By the time the film enters its final act, the emotional intensity has weakened considerably. Even so, Hashmi keeps the film watchable and reminds viewers why Shivam Pandit remains one of his most identifiable characters.

Bottomline: Stylish Yet Uneven

Rating: 2.5/5
