Latest Animation English Movie Review | Hoppers

Plot:

Hoppers follows Mabel (voiced by Piper Curda), a passionate 19-year-old environmental activist, who learns that a sacred forest she deeply cares for is at risk due to a highway construction project. To prevent its destruction, Mabel takes part in an experimental technology that transfers her consciousness into a robotic beaver. As she inhabits her new robotic body, she teams up with a group of woodland creatures, led by Beaver King George (Bobby Moynihan), to protect the forest. The film explores themes of environmental responsibility, empathy, and the connection between humans and animals, mixing comedy with heartfelt moments.

Overview:

Directed by Daniel Chong, Hoppers is a Pixar animated adventure that blends humor, emotional storytelling, and an environmental message. The film follows Mabel’s journey from an activist to a robotic animal, using her new form to stop the destruction of the forest. With a quirky group of woodland characters and comedic sequences, the film brings environmental themes to the forefront while delivering an entertaining and heartwarming experience. Though it may not have the emotional depth of Pixar’s best, it still charms with its creativity and humor.

Performances:

Piper Curda brings Mabel to life with a blend of fiery determination and vulnerability, capturing the essence of an activist deeply invested in nature. Bobby Moynihan’s portrayal of Beaver King George stands out, offering a mix of calm wisdom and humor. The supporting cast, including Dave Franco as Titus, delivers energetic comic performances that keep the mood light. While the performances are solid, the emotional depth of the characters doesn't quite match that of Pixar’s most iconic films.

Technical Aspects:

The animation in Hoppers is colorful and imaginative, with lively character designs that reflect the playful nature of the film. Vidya Sagar Chinta’s work on the visuals, especially during chaotic sequences, is impressive, and the forest is rendered with meticulous detail, bringing the world to life. The design of the robotic beaver and the "hopping" technology adds a creative and fun layer to the film’s tone.

Music:

Kaala Bhairava’s music complements the whimsical and emotional aspects of the film, building tension and excitement during the action sequences. However, it doesn’t quite reach the iconic status of Pixar’s other memorable scores. The soundtrack enhances the viewing experience but doesn’t fully carry the film’s charm on its own.

Editing:

The pacing of Hoppers is brisk, keeping the film's energy high throughout. However, the transitions between comedic and emotional moments could have been smoother, as some tonal shifts feel abrupt. Despite this, the editing manages to keep the film moving without significant lulls, and the final sequences, where the stakes rise, are well-paced. A tighter emotional focus could have made the narrative more impactful.

Positives:

  • Creative and engaging animation.
  • Fun, quirky characters with strong voice performances.
  • Emotional storytelling with an environmental message.
  • Humorous and inventive plot.
  • Unique blend of humor and environmental themes.

Negatives:

  • Predictable plot in some areas.
  • Emotional depth not as strong as Pixar’s best films.
  • Abrupt tonal shifts between comedy and drama.
  • The environmental message feels heavy-handed at times.

Analysis:

Hoppers offers a refreshing approach to environmental storytelling, combining humor and imaginative animation. While it entertains with its quirky characters and fun sequences, it struggles to match the emotional depth of Pixar’s classics. The environmental themes are relevant but occasionally feel overemphasized, disrupting the natural flow of the story. Despite this, Hoppers delivers a fun, inventive experience, especially appealing to younger audiences.

Bottomline: Inventive, Entertaining

Rating: 3.5/5
