Latest English Movie Review: Wicked: For Good

Plot

Wicked: For Good marks the concluding chapter of Jon M. Chu’s two-part adaptation of the Broadway phenomenon. The story follows Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) as their friendship reaches its emotional and ideological breaking point. Political unrest intensifies across Oz, propaganda spreads rapidly, and long-hidden truths about the Wizard surface. As loyalties are tested and identities questioned, Elphaba and Glinda must confront the consequences of their choices while navigating betrayal, sacrifice, and destiny.

Overview

The film aims for epic emotional closure but delivers a mixed experience. Visually breathtaking and mounted on a grand scale, the movie dazzles with rich production design and expansive world-building. However, the narrative leans heavily into darker political themes, creating tonal imbalance. While the ambition is undeniable, the storytelling struggles with pacing and emotional cohesion, preventing the finale from reaching its full potential.

Performances

Cynthia Erivo (Elphaba)

  • Delivers a fierce and emotionally grounded performance.
  • Her commanding screen presence and powerhouse vocals anchor the film’s emotional core.

Ariana Grande (Glinda)

  • Portrays a gentle yet conflicted Glinda with subtle emotional nuance.
  • Her expressive performance adds warmth to an otherwise heavy narrative.

Supporting Cast

  • Jeff Goldblum is sly and charismatic as the Wizard.
  • Michelle Yeoh brings poise and authority as Madame Morrible.
  • Jonathan Bailey offers sincerity as Fiyero.
  • Ethan Slater and Marissa Bode leave impressions despite limited screen time.

However, the screenplay doesn’t allow supporting characters the emotional depth they deserve.

Technical Aspects

Visuals & Production Design

  • The strongest aspect of the film. Oz appears immersive, vibrant, and richly layered.
  • Costumes and set pieces are meticulously detailed.
  • IMAX 3D presentation enhances spectacle and scale.

Cinematography

  • Every frame feels painterly and grand. While visually stunning.
  • The imagery often overshadows narrative substance.

Music

Cynthia Erivo’s solos soar with emotional intensity, standing out as major highlights. Ariana Grande’s vocal performances are delicate and beautifully controlled. However, new additions to the soundtrack lack memorability, and reprises sometimes feel like filler rather than narrative drivers. The musical highs don’t consistently match expectations for a grand finale.

Editing

The pacing is uneven. The first half drags with indulgent scenes and extended musical numbers. The latter half picks up momentum but arrives late. Some sequences feel rushed, while others linger unnecessarily.

Positives

• Spectacular visuals and immersive world-building
• Powerful performances by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande
• Grand IMAX 3D cinematic experience
• Rich production design and costumes
• Strong individual musical moments

Negatives

• Sluggish and uneven pacing
• Emotionally distant screenplay
• Overly heavy and grim tone
• Underdeveloped supporting characters
• Inconsistent musical impact
• Muted emotional payoff

Analysis

Wicked: For Good succeeds visually but falters emotionally. The grandeur of its production cannot fully compensate for the screenplay’s heavy-handed tone and pacing issues. The darker political focus overshadows the heartfelt friendship at the story’s center.

Though the performances by Erivo and Grande bring emotional truth to their characters, the narrative rarely allows their bond to resonate deeply. The film concludes the story but lacks the magical catharsis audiences anticipated. It closes the chapter, yet the emotional echo feels softer than expected.

Bottomline: Grand Spectacle
