The death toll in the Vizag Steel Plant explosion has risen to nine after another injured worker succumbed to severe burn injuries on Wednesday morning.
The latest casualty was identified as Pydiraju. According to Visakhapatnam district joint collector G Vidhyadhari, he died at around 8.17 am after battling critical burn injuries. His body was shifted to King George Hospital in Visakhapatnam for a post-mortem and was later handed over to his family members.
Blast During Casting Operations
The explosion and fire occurred at Steel Melt Shop-1 of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant during casting operations involving molten steel on Monday evening.
Eight workers had died earlier in the accident, while six others sustained injuries. Pydiraju was among the seriously injured workers and had reportedly suffered nearly 90 percent burns.
Bodies Handed Over To Families
Officials said the bodies of the eight workers who died earlier were handed over to their families after the completion of post-mortem and other formalities.
Most of the deceased workers were from Visakhapatnam and nearby areas. The body of one worker from Bihar was released after his family members arrived and completed the required procedures.
Safety Concerns After Tragedy
The accident has raised serious concerns over industrial safety at high-risk workplaces, especially in units dealing with molten steel and heavy machinery.
Families of the deceased workers are awaiting further support, while attention has now turned to the condition of the remaining injured workers and the investigation into the cause of the blast.
