Cyclone Arnab: Naidu Focuses On Relief And Power Restoration

Cyclone Arnab Aftermath Leaves Seven Dead

Andhra Pradesh has shifted its focus to relief and recovery after Cyclone Arnab made landfall near Narsapur on October 28. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu placed preliminary losses at approximately ₹4,600 crore, cautioning that the figure could rise after detailed assessments.

Seven people died in cyclone-related incidents, including electrocution, falling trees and poles, and floodwaters. The government announced ₹5 lakh in assistance for each bereaved family.

Ahead of landfall, authorities established 290 relief centres that accommodated 84,396 people, according to the evacuation figures cited in the source. Vulnerable residents, including pregnant women, were moved to safer locations and healthcare facilities.

Crop And Infrastructure Damage Hits Livelihoods

A preliminary agricultural assessment dated October 29 identified approximately 3.51 lakh hectares of damaged or submerged crops, including around 3.45 lakh hectares of paddy. Horticultural damage extended across another 22,457 hectares, affecting more than 77,000 farmers.

Farmers in West Godavari, Kakinada, East Godavari, Konaseema and Krishna suffered substantial losses. At Vetlapalem, some farmers said their paddy was only 15 days away from harvest. Aquaculture losses were provisionally estimated at ₹176.82 crore, while fishing communities faced damage to boats and nets.

An October 29 disaster-management assessment recorded 3,631 damaged houses and 3,009 damaged huts. Approximately 2,803 kilometres of state highways and major district roads were affected, alongside 151.9 kilometres of panchayat roads. Preliminary damage to electricity infrastructure was estimated at ₹500 crore.

Andhra Pradesh Announces Compensation And Relief

Families returning from relief camps will receive 25 kg of rice, essential commodities and financial assistance for immediate needs. Food assistance has also been announced for fishermen and handloom workers.

The government announced ₹1,500 for each damaged coconut and oil palm tree. Officials are conducting field-level assessments of agricultural and horticultural losses, with compensation intended for direct transfer to eligible farmers’ bank accounts.

The Cabinet approved relief measures and instructed officials to issue the necessary orders. Restoration teams are repairing electricity poles, power lines and transformers to restore essential services.

Recovery Depends On Assessments And Restoration

Telangana approved electricity restoration support following Andhra Pradesh’s request for 1,000 personnel. The assistance is intended to help repair damaged poles and power lines in affected areas.

Naidu conducted aerial and ground surveys on October 29 and briefed Union Home Minister Amit Shah about the damage. Central assessment teams were expected to visit on October 30.

The ₹4,600 crore estimate remains provisional. Detailed verification of crop, housing, aquaculture and infrastructure losses will determine the final recovery requirement. Immediate priorities include restoring electricity and road access, supporting displaced families and delivering assistance to affected livelihoods.
