Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu inaugurated the first phase of the Veligonda Project on Monday, marking a major milestone for drought-prone regions of the state. The project is expected to strengthen irrigation facilities, improve access to drinking water and reduce dependence on groundwater across several underserved areas.

The inauguration carried special significance for Naidu, who laid the foundation stone for the project in 1996. Nearly three decades later, the opening of Phase 1 represents the completion of an important stage in a long-awaited water infrastructure initiative.

The project has remained a major aspiration for communities that regularly experience low rainfall, recurring droughts and pressure on groundwater resources. Its first phase is now expected to begin delivering practical benefits to farmers and residents across the intended command area.

Under Phase 1, the project is designed to divert 10.7 TMC of Krishna floodwater from the Srisailam reservoir to Nallamala Sagar. This water will be used to support agricultural operations and meet drinking-water requirements in areas affected by seasonal shortages.

The diversion system is expected to make better use of floodwater during periods of adequate inflow into the Srisailam reservoir. By transferring water to Nallamala Sagar, the project can create a more dependable source for irrigation and domestic consumption in drought-vulnerable regions.

Officials expect the first phase to bring approximately 1.19 lakh acres under irrigation. This could help farmers improve crop planning, reduce the risks associated with irregular rainfall and explore more reliable cultivation cycles.

The project is expected to benefit communities in drought-affected parts of Prakasam, Markapuram, Nellore and Kadapa. These regions have faced recurring challenges related to water scarcity, falling groundwater levels and limited irrigation access.

Nearly four lakh people are expected to receive drinking water through the project. Improved supply could ease pressure on borewells and other groundwater sources while giving rural settlements a more reliable option during the summer and prolonged dry periods.

For farmers, dependable irrigation can help reduce crop losses and encourage the cultivation of commercially viable crops. Better water availability may also support dairy farming, livestock activity and agriculture-linked businesses, creating broader economic opportunities in rural areas.

The project’s long-term impact, however, will depend on efficient water management, timely maintenance and equitable distribution across the command area. Regular monitoring will be essential to ensure that water reaches villages and agricultural lands identified under the scheme.

Veligonda is more than a conventional irrigation project for the people of the region. It represents a decades-long demand and the possibility of lasting relief from recurring drought conditions.

The completion of Phase 1 is expected to improve agricultural productivity and create new livelihood opportunities. Stable water availability can encourage investment in storage, food processing, transportation and other rural services connected to farming.

Improved drinking-water access could also enhance public health and reduce the time rural families spend securing water. Lower dependence on groundwater may help protect underground reserves and contribute to more sustainable water use.

With Phase 1 inaugurated, attention will now turn to effective implementation and the completion of the project’s remaining components. If operated as planned, Veligonda could significantly reshape the social and economic landscape of drought-prone areas in Andhra Pradesh.
