TVK Leader Bribe Allegation Sparks Row After Vijay’s Karur Speech
A fresh political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after BJP leader Vinoj P Selvam circulated footage that allegedly shows a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam functionary receiving money from a government contractor. The allegation emerged shortly after Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay delivered a strong anti-corruption message during his public meeting in Karur.
The authenticity of the circulated footage has not been independently verified, and no finding by an investigating authority has established the bribery allegation at this stage.
BJP Raises ₹1.3 Lakh Bribe Allegation
The person shown in the footage has been identified in reports as N V Veera, president of the Mambakkam panchayat union and joint secretary of TVK’s Chengalpattu East district unit.
The footage purportedly shows Veera receiving ₹30,000 in cash from a contractor. A person can also reportedly be heard claiming that another ₹1 lakh had already been transferred, taking the alleged total payment to ₹1.30 lakh.
However, the circumstances surrounding the recording, the purpose of the alleged payment, and the authenticity of the footage have not been officially confirmed.
Vinoj P Selvam used the allegation to question TVK’s commitment to clean administration. He claimed the footage had exposed a gap between the government’s anti-corruption promises and the alleged conduct of one of the ruling party’s functionaries.
Allegation Follows Vijay’s Karur Speech
The controversy gained political attention because it surfaced soon after Vijay’s July 10 visit to Karur, where he urged citizens not to pay bribes to government officials.
“When someone asks you for a bribe, tell them directly that you won’t give it,” Vijay told the gathering.
The chief minister assured the public that his government would stand with people who resisted demands for illegal payments. He also warned that those involved in corruption, bribery, or misuse of authority would not be permitted to continue such activities.
The Karur programme was Vijay’s first official visit to the district following the deadly 2025 stampede at one of his pre-election rallies. His anti-corruption remarks circulated widely after the meeting.
Opposition Steps Up Attack on TVK
The BJP’s allegation has provided opposition parties with another opportunity to challenge the TVK government’s clean-governance claims.
Senior DMK leader T K S Elangovan has separately referred to allegations raised by a lawyer associated with TVK. According to Elangovan, the lawyer approached a court claiming that senior party functionaries accepted payments for appointments within the party’s legal wing.
Elangovan maintained that the accusations originated from someone connected with TVK rather than from the DMK. These claims also remain allegations and have not been established through a final judicial finding.
TVK Response Awaited
At the time of the initial reports, TVK had not issued a detailed official response addressing the allegation against Veera or explaining whether the party would initiate an internal inquiry.
The party’s response will be closely watched because Vijay has positioned opposition to bribery and misuse of public office as an important part of his government’s political message.
Any disciplinary or investigative action would depend on verification of the footage and examination of the alleged financial transaction. Until then, the claims against the TVK functionary must be treated as unproven allegations rather than facts.
The controversy is nevertheless likely to intensify political debate over corruption and accountability in Tamil Nadu, particularly because of the contrast being drawn between Vijay’s Karur speech and the alleged conduct shown in the circulating footage.
