India’s Six-Medal Surge Takes CWG 2026 Tally to 10

Glasgow, July 28, 2026: The India CWG 2026 Day 5 medal winners delivered the country’s most successful outing of the Games so far, collecting six medals across para athletics, athletics, and weightlifting.

India’s tally rose to 10 medals at the end of the competition on Monday, July 27. The overall collection included two gold, five silver, and three bronze medals, with the country moving to eighth place in the standings at the conclusion of Day 5.

India CWG 2026 Day 5 Medal Winners

India secured one gold, three silver, and two bronze medals during a memorable day in Glasgow.

Sharmila Dhankar won gold in the women’s shot put F57 event, while Sarvesh Kushare, Gyaneshwari Yadav, and Valluri Ajaya Babu claimed silver medals. Bindyarani Devi and Shilpa K. Shyla completed the list with bronze medals.

The six-medal performance more than doubled India’s tally from four to 10 and strengthened the country’s campaign heading into the remaining days of competition.

Sharmila Dhankar Creates Para Athletics History

Sharmila Dhankar produced the biggest Indian moment of Day 5 by winning the women’s shot put F57 gold medal with a season-best throw of 9.81 metres.

The victory made Dhankar India’s first Commonwealth Games para athletics gold medallist. It also ended the country’s 20-year wait for a para athletics medal at the Games.

India secured a double podium finish in the event after Shilpa K. Shyla was awarded bronze. Shyla had initially finished fourth with a personal-best throw of 7.26 metres, but her position was upgraded following a successful protest by the Indian team.

Sarvesh Kushare Wins Historic High Jump Silver

Sarvesh Kushare added another landmark result by winning silver in the men’s high jump.

The national record holder cleared 2.25 metres and finished behind Jamaica’s Romaine Beckford on countback. Both athletes were unable to clear 2.28 metres, but Beckford secured gold based on fewer failed attempts earlier in the competition.

Kushare became the first Indian to win a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games men’s high jump. His performance improved upon Tejaswin Shankar’s bronze-medal finish at Birmingham 2022.

Adarsh Ram finished fifth after clearing 2.15 metres, while Tejaswin withdrew after his opening attempts as he prepared for the decathlon.

Weightlifters Add Three More Medals

Weightlifting continued to be India’s most productive sport at the Games, contributing three medals on Day 5.

Valluri Ajaya Babu won silver in the men’s 79kg category with a combined lift of 330kg. He recorded 149kg in the snatch and 181kg in the clean and jerk, finishing only one kilogram behind Malaysia’s Erry Hidayat Muhammad.

Gyaneshwari Yadav earned silver in the women’s 53kg category with a total of 199kg. She lifted 88kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk.

Bindyarani Devi secured bronze in the women’s 58kg division, also finishing with a combined total of 199kg. India’s weightlifting medal count consequently increased to six at the Glasgow Games.

Indian Boxers Move Closer to Medals

India also registered encouraging results in boxing, where three competitors advanced to the quarterfinals.

Sachin Siwach defeated England’s William Hewitt 4-1 in the men’s 60kg round of 16. Ankush recorded a commanding 5-0 victory over Antigua and Barbuda’s Jan Zalaan in the men’s 80kg division.

Sakshi Chaudhary progressed in the women’s 51kg category after securing a unanimous victory against Botswana’s Lethabo Modukanele. Each boxer moved within one victory of guaranteeing a medal.

Sumit was eliminated from the men’s 70kg competition following a narrow split-decision loss to Northern Ireland’s Jon McConnell.

Sreeshankar and Lokesh Reach Long Jump Final

M Sreeshankar comfortably qualified for the men’s long jump final with an opening effort of 8.01 metres, crossing the automatic qualification mark.

Lokesh Sathyanathan joined him in the final after producing a best jump of 7.77 metres. Their qualification gave India two medal contenders in the event.

Tejas Shirse also became the first Indian to reach a Commonwealth Games men’s 110m hurdles final. However, an injury suffered during his warm-up affected his performance, and he finished eighth.

National record holder Gurindervir Singh missed the men’s 100m semifinals despite finishing second in his heat.
