The MV Golden Leo attack near Ukraine’s Odesa port killed four Indian nationals and left another Indian crew member critically injured, according to India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

The commercial vessel came under attack on the evening of Sunday, July 19, 2026, while departing from the Black Sea port. There were 17 crew members aboard the ship, including five Indian nationals. Four of the Indians died, while the fifth was admitted to the hospital in critical condition.

The Ministry of External Affairs said the Indian Embassy in Ukraine was closely monitoring the situation and making efforts to provide all possible assistance to the injured sailor and the families affected by the tragedy.

The ministry expressed condolences to the families of the deceased Indian nationals and wished the critically injured crew member a speedy and complete recovery.

India also condemned attacks on commercial shipping, stressing that civilian crew members and vessels engaged in international trade should not be targeted. The government said actions that endanger seafarers or interfere with freedom of navigation and commerce were deplorable and should be avoided.

What Happened to the MV Golden Leo?

The MV Golden Leo was a Guinea-Bissau-flagged commercial cargo vessel carrying corn when it was attacked shortly after leaving Odesa.

Ukraine’s navy said the vessel was struck by three Russian cruise missiles. The missiles reportedly caused a major fire aboard the ship, prompting an overnight search-and-rescue operation.

The Indian government’s official statement confirmed the Indian casualties but did not identify the country responsible for the attack. The attribution to Russia was made by Ukrainian authorities and reported by Reuters.

Reports said the ship was crewed by nationals from India and Syria. Reuters reported that ten people were killed overall, including crew members and a Ukrainian maritime pilot, while eight of the vessel’s 17 crew members were rescued.

The vessel is owned by Mumbai-based Ocean Grace Shipping Limited, according to shipping ownership information cited by Reuters.

Growing Danger to Black Sea Commercial Shipping

The Odesa cargo ship attack has renewed concerns about the safety of commercial vessels operating in the Black Sea during the continuing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Odesa and other Ukrainian ports are central to the export of corn, wheat, and other agricultural products. Ships operating along these routes carry food supplies to markets across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
