Delhi Gymkhana Club Seeks Clarity After Safdarjung Road Vacate Notice
Delhi Gymkhana Club Seeks Relocation Clarity
Delhi Gymkhana Club has asked the Centre to ensure that its services are not disrupted after it was directed to vacate its 27.3-acre premises on Safdarjung Road by June 5, 2026. The club has written to the Land and Development Officer under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, seeking clarity on whether it will be relocated and whether alternative land will be allotted.
Centre Cites Strategic Land Requirement
The Centre’s May 22, 2026, order said the land was originally leased to the Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club for running a social and sporting club. The government stated that the premises are located in a sensitive and strategic area of the national capital and are now required for defence infrastructure, governance needs, and other public-interest projects.
Members And Staff May Be Affected
In its May 23, 2026, response, the club stated that any sudden action could affect nearly 14,000 members and users, as well as more than 500 employees. It also mentioned that talks over lease rent are already underway, and a related petition is pending before the Delhi High Court. The club has requested an urgent meeting with officials and urged the Centre to avoid any dislocation of operations until relocation and land allotment issues are clarified.
