Bengaluru Second Airport Feasibility Report Likely By September
The Bengaluru second airport feasibility report is expected to be ready by September, after which the Karnataka government is likely to take a call on the next stage of the proposed project. The second international airport is being planned to support Bengaluru’s growing air traffic and reduce future pressure on Kempegowda International Airport in Devanahalli.
Chief Minister DK Shivakumar reviewed the progress of the proposal on Wednesday and sought updates from officials on the ongoing studies. According to officials, the meeting was a preliminary review, and no final decision was taken on the airport site.
Bengaluru Second Airport Locations Under Review
The Airports Authority of India has already completed a pre-feasibility study for the proposed airport. Four possible locations are now being assessed in detail, including Chudahalli, Harohalli near Kanakapura, and Nelamangala.
Officials said detailed technical, economic, and financial feasibility studies are currently being carried out by the agencies concerned. These studies will examine several important factors, including environmental impact, land cost, passenger traffic, cargo potential, and overall project viability.
The final recommendation is expected to play a major role in deciding where Bengaluru’s second international airport may come up.
CM Shivakumar Stresses Low Displacement
Speaking to reporters after the review, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said his main concern was to ensure that villages are not displaced for the airport project.
“My concern is that no villages should be displaced for the airport project. At the same time, the land acquisition cost should be reasonable. If there are a few houses in the selected area, we will pay compensation,” Shivakumar said.
The statement indicates that the government is looking not only at aviation requirements but also at social impact and land acquisition challenges before making a final decision.
Why Bengaluru Needs A Second International Airport
The Karnataka government has been pursuing the second airport proposal to meet Bengaluru’s long-term aviation demand. Kempegowda International Airport has witnessed steady growth over the years, driven by the city’s expanding IT, startup, manufacturing, and business ecosystem.
With Bengaluru continuing to grow as a major economic hub, officials believe a second airport will be important for future passenger movement, cargo handling, and regional development.
The proposal has also gained attention after Tamil Nadu announced plans for a new airport near Hosur, close to the Karnataka border. This has added urgency to Karnataka’s efforts to plan aviation infrastructure for the Bengaluru region.
What Happens Next?
Once the feasibility report is ready by September, the Karnataka government is expected to examine the findings before deciding the next course of action. The report will help compare the shortlisted locations based on land availability, cost, environmental concerns, connectivity, passenger demand, and cargo potential.
For now, the government has not announced any final site. Officials have made it clear that the current process is still at the study stage.
If cleared, the Bengaluru second airport project could become one of Karnataka’s most important infrastructure developments, with the potential to shape connectivity and economic growth around the city for decades.
