NASA 2026 Moon Missions To Prepare Future Lunar Base

NASA Plans 2026 Moon Missions

NASA has announced a new roadmap for its 2026 Moon missions as it prepares to build humanity’s first long-term lunar outpost. The plan focuses on the Moon’s South Pole, a region seen as important for future astronaut landings, scientific research, and deeper space missions.

The first mission, Moon Base I, will use Blue Origin’s lunar lander to deliver two scientific instruments to a ridge near the South Pole. These instruments will study how rocket exhaust affects the Moon’s surface during landing and help spacecraft identify their exact location from orbit.

Rovers And Cargo Tests For Lunar Base

Moon Base II will send a small rover and nearly 500 kg of supplies to test how cargo can be moved across the lunar surface. Moon Base III will study bright surface areas known as lunar swirls and carry equipment from the European Space Agency and South Korea’s space agency.

NASA has also given contracts to Astrolab and Lunar Outpost to build Moon rovers expected to be ready by 2028. These rovers will help astronauts travel, move supplies, and work in difficult terrain. In 2028, NASA also plans to send four small hopping drones to photograph areas that are unsafe or hard for rovers to reach.

With landers, cargo tests, rovers, and drones, NASA says the roadmap is a major step toward a continuous human presence on the Moon and future missions beyond it.
