Opposition Cheers Women’s Quota Bill Defeat, NDA Calls It ‘Anti-Women’ Move

The defeat of the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha triggered a sharp political confrontation between the ruling NDA and a united Opposition, exposing deep divisions over women’s representation in Parliament. The bill failed to secure the required two-thirds majority, garnering 298 votes in favour and 230 against—well short of the 352 needed for passage.

Following the setback, NDA leaders launched a strong offensive against Opposition parties, accusing them of blocking a key reform aimed at empowering women. Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticised the Opposition for what he described as an “anti-women mindset,” arguing that the move denied women long-awaited representation in legislative bodies. Senior BJP leaders echoed similar views, calling the defeat a blow to women’s empowerment and alleging that political considerations had been prioritised over national progress. The ruling alliance also indicated plans to take the issue to the public through nationwide protests.

Opposition leaders, however, defended their position, stating that their objection was not to women’s reservation itself but to the structure and timing of the bill. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said the Opposition remained united during the vote and rejected allegations of being anti-women. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi supported the outcome, raising concerns over the government’s approach and alleging constitutional issues. He claimed the Opposition had successfully blocked what he termed an improper attempt to alter electoral dynamics.

Concerns surrounding delimitation and representation—particularly from southern states—emerged as a key point of contention. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin stressed the need for equitable representation and criticised linking women’s reservation with delimitation. The episode marks a rare show of unity among Opposition parties and underscores the challenges the government faces in pushing constitutional amendments. While the NDA is expected to continue advocating for the measure, the Opposition has described the outcome as a significant political victory, setting the stage for a broader political contest in the months ahead.
