Telangana pregnant woman death: Husband held over DNA test claim

Telangana pregnant woman's death case reported from Medak

A 23-year-old pregnant woman allegedly died by suicide in Telangana’s Medak district after her husband reportedly questioned the paternity of their unborn child and demanded a DNA test. The incident took place in Gadipeddapur village under Alladurg mandal and has led to the arrest of the woman’s husband and mother-in-law.

The deceased has been identified as G Sushmita, a native of Mothkupally village in Vikarabad district. She had been married to G Abhilash, a bangle seller from Gadipeddapur, for around 18 months. Police said Sushmita was five months pregnant at the time of her death.

Family alleges harassment over DNA test demand

According to a complaint filed by Sushmita’s mother, G Janabai, the young woman had been facing continuous physical and mental harassment at her marital home. The complaint alleged that Abhilash repeatedly raised doubts about the unborn child and demanded a DNA test, causing severe emotional distress to Sushmita.

Janabai told police that she and her husband visited Sushmita’s house on June 23 to discuss arrangements for a baby shower ceremony. During the visit, Abhilash allegedly argued over the ceremony and again demanded a DNA test for the unborn child in the presence of family members.

The family alleged that the demand publicly questioned Sushmita’s character and left her deeply humiliated. Community elders reportedly intervened after the argument, following which Sushmita’s parents returned to their village.

Husband and mother-in-law sent to judicial remand

Two days after the alleged argument, Sushmita was found dead at her residence on the evening of June 25. Villagers informed her parents about the incident, after which the family approached the police and accused Abhilash and his mother, Laxmi, of driving Sushmita to take the extreme step through repeated harassment.

Alladurg police arrested Abhilash and Laxmi on Saturday. Police officials said both were produced before a magistrate and sent to judicial remand. Sushmita’s body was handed over to her family after a post-mortem examination.

Police book case under BNS sections

Based on the complaint, police registered a case on June 26 under Section 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with cruelty by a husband or his relatives, and Section 108, related to abetment of suicide. Section 3(5), dealing with common intention, was also added.

Police said further investigation is underway. Officials are expected to examine statements from family members, neighbours, and community elders who were allegedly aware of the disputes between the couple.

Case raises concern over domestic cruelty

The Telangana pregnant woman's death case has raised concern over the impact of suspicion, humiliation, and domestic harassment on women, especially during pregnancy. While the allegations will be examined through the legal process, the incident has again highlighted the need for families and authorities to respond seriously to complaints of mental and physical abuse within marriage.

The investigation remains ongoing, and further details are expected after police complete their inquiry.
