Ebola Outbreak 2026: WHO Raises Alarm Over Bundibugyo Strain In Congo And Uganda

WHO Alerts Nations As Rare Ebola Strain Spreads In Congo And Uganda

WHO Issues Global Health Alert

The World Health Organisation has declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern. The outbreak is linked to the rare Bundibugyo Ebola strain, which has raised concern because there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment for this variant. According to recent updates, Congo has reported more than 500 suspected cases and over 130 deaths, while Uganda has also confirmed cases linked to the spread.

Why Bundibugyo Strain Is A Concern

Health experts say the Bundibugyo strain is dangerous because earlier outbreaks recorded high fatality rates. WHO has said previous Bundibugyo virus disease outbreaks had case fatality rates between 30 percent and 50 percent. The current outbreak has also reached areas affected by conflict, population movement, and weak health surveillance, making contact tracing and isolation more difficult.

How Ebola Spreads

Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood, body fluids, or contaminated materials of an infected person. Unlike COVID-19, it does not normally spread through the air, but it can move quickly in communities when patients are not isolated early. Experts say quick testing, safe burial practices, protective gear for health workers, and strict monitoring of contacts are important steps to control the outbreak.
