TVK–Congress Alliance Sealed, AIADMK Puts Talks on Hold
TVK Pauses AIADMK Talks After Sealing Alliance with Congress in Tamil Nadu

Actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has paused coalition discussions with AIADMK after formally securing support from the Congress party following the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results. The development has intensified government formation efforts after TVK’s strong debut performance.

Congress leaders met Vijay at the party headquarters in Chennai and officially extended support for forming the government. The Congress Legislative Party and the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee handed over a formal letter backing TVK, confirming the alliance between the two parties.

TVK emerged as one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 Assembly elections, winning 108 seats in its first electoral outing. Congress secured five seats, bringing the alliance closer to the majority mark in the 234-member Assembly and significantly shifting post-poll political equations.

Following the announcement, TVK reportedly decided to temporarily pause coalition negotiations with AIADMK. Political observers say Congress's support has altered the balance of power in the state’s post-election landscape.

Vijay also met R. N. Ravi to formally stake claim to form the government. Preparations are reportedly underway in Chennai for a possible swearing-in ceremony as discussions continue.

BJP leaders criticised Congress for backing TVK, calling it another instance of shifting alliances in Tamil Nadu politics. Despite the criticism, TVK and Congress leaders maintain that the partnership is aimed at ensuring stable governance in the state.
