Visakhapatnam has reached a significant milestone by securing a USD 1 million grant in the 2025–2026 Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Challenge, a highly regarded international competition. Chosen from over 630 cities globally, this award acknowledges the city’s citizen-led climate resilience initiative, the Vizag–Prajamukhi Urban Living Lab (V-PULL).
The V-PULL initiative, spearheaded by the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), focuses on enhancing resilience against floods, cyclones, and heatwaves through hyperlocal planning and community involvement. Unlike traditional top-down approaches, V-PULL promotes ward-level meetings, pilot projects, and feedback systems to integrate citizen input with data-driven solutions, improving disaster preparedness throughout the city. GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg noted that this recognition strengthens the belief in the power of citizen-driven innovation to transform cities, particularly in the face of climate challenges. The $1 million grant will support the expansion of ongoing initiatives, enhance disaster readiness, and extend the V-PULL model to additional wards in Visakhapatnam.
This award places Visakhapatnam alongside other major global urban centers like Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, Toronto, and Cape Town on the international climate innovation stage. The city's achievement is a testament to the effectiveness of local participation and innovative governance in addressing climate risks. For Andhra Pradesh, this victory holds significant political and strategic importance. As states vie for global recognition and investment, Visakhapatnam’s success strengthens the state’s narrative of fostering participatory governance and urban innovation. This accomplishment supports efforts to position Visakhapatnam as a prominent administrative and economic hub in the region.
