PM Modi 4,399-Day Milestone: Longest-Serving Elected PM Record Explained
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached a major political milestone by becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister in continuous office. On June 10, 2026, Modi completed 4,399 consecutive days as Prime Minister, crossing Jawaharlal Nehru’s elected-era record of 4,398 days.
Modi first took oath as Prime Minister on May 26, 2014, after the BJP won the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. He returned to power in 2019 and began his third consecutive term on June 9, 2024, after the NDA formed the government again. The official PM India website also confirms that Modi was sworn in for his third consecutive term on June 9, 2024.
NDA Marks A Major Political Moment
The milestone comes as the National Democratic Alliance marks 12 years in power at the Centre. Senior BJP leaders, chief ministers, deputy chief ministers, and representatives of NDA partner parties are expected to take part in a key meeting in Delhi to mark the achievement.
For the BJP and NDA, the 4,399-day mark is being projected as a sign of political continuity, voter trust, and stable leadership. The alliance is also expected to highlight its governance record, welfare programmes, infrastructure growth, and development agenda.
How Modi Crossed Nehru’s Elected-Era Record
Jawaharlal Nehru remains India’s longest-serving Prime Minister by total tenure, as he served from August 15, 1947, to May 27, 1964. However, the latest comparison is based specifically on continuous service after India’s first general elections.
Nehru’s elected tenure began after the 1952 elections and continued until 1964. Modi’s uninterrupted elected tenure, which began in 2014, reached 4,399 days on June 10, 2026, giving him the elected-era record.
Three Consecutive Terms Add To The Record
Modi is now only the second Indian Prime Minister, after Nehru, to lead the country for three consecutive terms. His terms began in 2014, 2019, and 2024, making the 4,399-day milestone a major chapter in India’s modern political history.
The achievement is likely to remain a major talking point in national politics, especially as the BJP presents it as a symbol of long-term public support and leadership consistency.
